Before we came home permanently from Scotland, we took a two-month detour through the USA.
As a kid, I was obsessed with all things American. The accent, the food and especially the landscape. The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, the forests, the rivers and deserts were highlights of our trip.
But I never could quite wrap my head around the huge variety of Cacti that was to be found there – especially since our own country has very different desert vegetation.
And as someone who has always loved Cacti (my university windowsill was home to my very first one), my camera roll was full of random cacti that I saw from the passenger seat of our rental car.
Last month, I was experimenting with watercolours and painted a quick desert scene, but in the end, I loved it so much that I decided to try and recreate it in acrylics, and despite the fact that it took several long paint sessions to even feel like it was coming together.
DESERT MOON is a reminder that there is such whimsy and beauty to be found in the desert, and how alive it comes when the moon is at its peak.
