THE DREAMCATCHER
For as long as I can remember I have been a vivid dreamer. For me this means I am immersed into intense dreams that are full colour and steeped in story almost every night.
Some nights I feel I have lived another whole day in my dreams, I am so exhausted and have what I call a dream hang over.
Some times my dreams are so interesting that I want to go back to see how it ends, some mornings I am desperate to wake up because the dreams are just that intense.
Since I was a very little girl, I have been captivated by dream catchers, and the symbolism and meaning of them. For me dream catchers aren’t just a pretty decorations, but a symbol of protection when I am most vulnerable – in my dreams.
And not only did I surround myself with them from that moment on, but I have surrounded my family with them as well.
I have always loved the idea of making my own dreamcatcher, and a couple of years ago I found myself buying a large embroidery hoop to do just that.
Except like so many of my “brilliant ideas”, it became another half-done project, shoved in a cupboard for another time.
When I decided to make July’s half-done project the dreamcatcher, I knew wanted to include items that I had collected over the years, like my feather collection, and some trinkets that I have from my travels, but in the end I decided to kept it simple and uncluttered
Against the dark grey wall in my studio it looks amazing and I love how it stands out. (Because my studio is bathed in light the colours seem a bit muted in the photos)
Apart from the actual web (which was a little complicated because I didn’t want a full web) this was such a fun project and I am so happy with how it looks on my wall.
WHAT I USED:
↦The hoop I bought from a local shop.
↦The feathers are from my collection.
↦The white and black thread is crochet cotton.
↦The peach and blue thread is from Kmart.
↦It’s hard to see but the panel of soft grey paint is just acrylic from my paint stash
↦And the stick is from my backyard (I swung from a very cool crooked one to this one, the crooked one was just a bit to thick for the hoop to work unfortunately)
And the butterfly is from a ring I bought years ago that broke, and has been stuck to my wall since I moved the studio into this room but looks like I deliberately put it there for the photo!! (SCORE!)
Because I used an embroidery hoop, I actually have a second frame, which I may use to make another one, or perhaps try something new…. I would love to know if you have any suggestions??
HALF-DONE PROJECT AUGUST
The half-done project I have chosen for next month may include an impulsive purchase after seeing a photo on Pinterest (Damn you Pinterest!) and thoughts of inviting nature into our day….
